2. Just went there a year and a half ago.... you must go there |
|
We loved Denali national park. Incredible scenery and great hiking and wildlife. Also, make sure to drive the Dalton Highway to the Arctic Circle and further north if you can. From Fairbanks to the Arctic Circle, the road is pretty good. You cross the yukon...in gods country.
We rented a motor home and drove from Anchorage to Denali, to Fairbanks, north to the arctic circle then back to Fairbanks and back to anchorage via Seward and the Kenai Peninsula. We were there in August. We saw Mt. McKinley each and every day, which is rare. its usually covered in clouds. Saw the northern lights, salmon in the rivers.... everywhere you look is awe inspiring.

3. Depends on what you like |
|
if you want to fish salmon and halibut, Seward or Homer.
Denali Park is a neat trip, but you have to be on a bus with a bunch of other tourists.
Anchorage is a great town.
Just a side note, rental car companies will NOT let you take a rental vehicle up the Haul Rd, so I don't know how the other poster did that.
If it were me, (I am a remote kind of guy) I would go to Kotzebue, find an air taxi (NorthWestern Aviation comes to mind) and I would raft a river for a week. Best experience in the world.

All of it.
ed. -- DD, I think we finally convinced everybody that PETA was off base on banning the salmon fishing. Thanks for the back-up.

7. As a fellow carinivore |

no problem. I really wish the PETA movement would somehow someway become dissociated with the democrats. They don't HELP us much and hurt us a lot. MOST people I know, not only eat meat, the ENJOY IT!!!

5. avoid the 36 glacier cruise... |
|
believe me after the first 10 glaciers you'll be ready to poke your eyes out with ice picks...
a cool tourist thing is to drive down to seward and take the kenai fjords boat cruise...now that is a real cool trip...bring a camera and if you're lucky you'll see some whales.
