Dear Clean Elections Supporter:
Just when we thought we were safe, the essential repeal of Clean Elections has surfaced in the legislature. In a massive 38-page strike everything amendment, Rep. Russell Pearce does away with Clean Elections funding for candidates and removes the surcharge on fines as a source of revenue for the Commission.
One of the most egregious provisions of the striker would increase individual campaign contribution limits to $5,000 for the primary election and another $5,000 for the general election. This would apply to candidates for statewide, legislative, county and city offices. That is twice what federal candidates are permitted to accept from individuals.
Pearce plans to have the wealthy and big money special interests control every level of government in this state.
In this last minute maneuver, Pearce was proposing to strike the language of Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR) 1013 in a special meeting of the House Appropriations Committee (P) with enormous changes in the campaign finance laws. The meeting was originally scheduled for Thursday, April 6th but the striker did not meet the posting deadline for tomorrow-s meeting. Today the committee meeting has been cancelled but it can be rescheduled as soon as Friday or next week.
Opponents of Clean Elections are out of touch with voters on this issue. A January 2006 Behavior Research Center poll showed 85% of registered Arizona voters think it is important to keep Clean Elections.
We need your help NOW to tell your legislators and members of the House Appropriations Committee (P) that you are OPPOSED to the strike everything amendment on SCR 1013.
Please contact your legislators (and candidates) and the committee members listed below and ask them to vote NO on the striker for SCR 1013. . While it is better to write individual emails to each member and/or call them, if you can't do that, one mail to all is better than no action. I did this myself: http://ga3.org/campaign/savearizona/
