Gunman was going to San Francisco to kill people
I-580 gunman targeted ACLU, Tides Foundation

OAKLAND, CA (KGO) -- Oakland police say I-580 shootout suspect Byron Williams was headed to San Francisco to commit mass murder when he was stopped by the California Highway Patrol.

"We believe that he was on his way to San Francisco to an organization called 'Tides' and also to the ACLU for the sole purpose to kill people," said police spokesman Jeff Thomason. "His plan was to go there and wait until it opens up in the morning. Our investigators brought up to him that the organizations are probably closed on Sundays and he said he was going to sit there and wait until they opened up."

2. I read about this guy...
...and am wondering how much right wing news he watched, and/or listened to regularly, and how much that inspired his plot for "revolution." :( So glad he was stopped, before he could hurt anyone.

3. And yet a Chron columnist held that up as an example of rampant crime in Oakland

In less than a 24-hour span, a motorist wearing body armor engaged in a gunbattle with police on Interstate 580 in Oakland, a Virginia man in the Bay Area for a job interview was slain downtown and a West Oakland sniper fired on police from a high-rise building.

Here in paradise, nobody even blinked.

The rest is basically a hatchet job on progressive mayor Ron Dellums. Note how he deftly substitutes "police" for "CHP officers". :eyes:

edit: Example: Four years ago, Oakland voters, by a razor-thin margin, elected the populist candidate - Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums - and it has cost the city in ways it could never have imagined. There's not a self-aware citizen anywhere in Oakland who doesn't understand the cost or consequence of doing nothing for another four years.

Dellums got just over 50 percent of the vote in a three-way race. The "razor-thin margin" was what kept him out of a runoff, which he likely would have won rather easily.
