Where would be the best place for me to live in Colorado?

I love the Boulder area, but I went to college there and I find it hoity-toity. It is also insanely expensive.

The area I live, South Jeffco is a nice area, except, I am about to go postal living among Christian conservatives. Most of the South Metro area is like that.

Colorado Springs is far worse than the south metro area in that respect too.

I am not too crazy about the southern part of the state because the mountains are not as nice. I don't like the eastern part of the state because the mountains are not there.

I don't really want to live in the city of Denver because, I don't want to live in the middle of a big city. Though, I think that LoDo is a cool place to hang out.

1. Have you been to Durango?

I have always liked that part of the state, plus its not too far from the Utah Canyonlands.

2. If work isn't a factor

I always wanted to live in Breckenridge. Or any of the non-Aspen,
non-Vail ski towns. Even Frisco would be an alternative. Course,
you have to enjoy being around tourists and not mind the long winters.

I remember a great line from the newspaper up there...

There are 4 seasons in Breckenridge...

6. I hit Crested Butte this weekend...

...really nice town, tons of Kerry and Miles yard signs. I like Breck and Durango, too.

It is hard to live in/near ski towns, though. Often expensive, and even when you get clever on your living arrangements, you still have to figure out a way to scratch out a living.

Worth it, though. I'm about 40 minutes from Telluride, and think I have the best mountains of anyone. :)

3. everywhere that's halfway nice has gotten expensive

If you want liberal - Denver/Boulder is just about it. Northwest Denver is particularily nice - the Highlands area, Tennyson street, etc. I would like to relocate there, but it cost too much.

4. I like north Lakewood

We've been here for a very long time. I guess just about anywhere in Colorado it's pretty conservative. But when I took a peek at that web site that shows who contributed to political campaigns in my zip code, I was surprised to see so many Dem contributors.

It's an older neighborhood, so there's more of a chance to find a fixer upper if that's okay. Try driving up and down the streets from Kipling to Wadsworth and between 20th and 26th Avenues.

We have Crown Hill Lake to walk, bike or ride a horse around, the main Jeffco Library that always seems to have all the liberal new books, lots of competitive grocery shopping, easy access to Denver if you work there. And the mountains are a stones throw. I worked a block from the capitol from 1976 to 1999 and it took me 20 minutes to drive to work at rush hour. There's the #20 bus that goes to the heart of downtown.

It's more of a family neighborhood than a she-she la-la type atmosphere. So, this old beatnik likes it a lot.

5. Chaffee County....Salida

Very beautiful AND Democratic...You see posters in the windows on the main street there that say "When Clinton lied, nobody died."

One problem....hugely expensive. My wife and I are both teachers and when two jobs came open at Salida High School last year we jumped at the chance. The local realtor showed us a double-wide for $200,000 and we decided a 50% pay cut from our suburban district for that was too much at this time.

10. Try Longmont

We're close enough to Boulder to be able to enjoy what's good about it w/out having to pay as high a price for housing. It's also Boulder County, so we live by many of the same environmental rules. We're still a little to the conservative side, but the community is welcoming and democrats aren't hugely outnumbered. We were in Udall's district until the repukes gerrymandered and now we are in (help us Lord) Musgrave's.

...what percentage of the vote Bob Kinsey, the Green candidate, skims off. He may well throw the race to Musgrave. Any other year, I'd welcome Bob's progressivism and insistence on staying in the race. Not this one. He's become our Nader.

13. After living in Jeffco

for 10+ years, I just looked at my daughter one day and said "We're moving to the hippie neighborhood." And off we went, to Highland, with it's coffee houses, good restaurants, art galleries, unique shops and sturdy old houses.
My house in Jeffco backed to a strip mall.

21. Boulder is okay

I've lived there (here) for 23 years - I just bought my first house out in Gunbarrel. Pretty down to earth neighborhood, not too expensive and just 12 minutes or so to downtown.

Durango is nice, too. So's the Roaring Fork Valley/Glenwood Springs area. My wife and I always talked about retiring out there.
