Republican state Treasurer Mike Coffman formed an exploratory committee to run for governor today, becoming the second potential candidate in what is expected to be a crowded race to replace GOP Gov. Bill Owens in two years.
Coffman said the state will need someone with leadership experience when Owens leaves office because of term limits.
The only other Republican so far to indicate an interest in the race is University of Denver President Marc Holtzman, who has no political experience. Holtzman said he will leave the school by the end of this year to help the GOP by either recruiting candidates or run for governor.
Holtzman was traveling overseas and did not return a phone call seeking comment.
