Bennet wins SEIU endorsement
Appointed Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet’s renewed support for a public health care option has helped land him the endorsement of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) in the Colorado U.S. Senate contest.
“Senator Bennet is standing up for health care reform and the public option,” said Dee Ann Blaine, a member of the SEIU’s Local 105 Executive Board. “We know Senator Bennet won’t stop fighting until we have meaningful health care reform that lowers costs and ends the insurance industry’s stranglehold on our health care system.”
Last week, Bennet, who is standing for his first election, joined three other Senate supporters in penning a letter to Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) calling for the public option to be included in health care legislation, even if it takes the controversial reconciliation procedure to keep it alive.
Reid ditched the option last fall after it became clear he didn’t have the 60 votes necessary to overcome a filibuster, but Bennet’s fresh push prompted many of his colleagues to sign on, earning him points with progressive groups....
