ct's house of rep's is currently debating death penalty

i'm a newbie and i work as a sessional at the ct state legislature and the state house of representatives is currently debating h.b. 6012 that would enact language that would repeal the death penalty in ct.

1. Hey there!

The death penalty is state-sponsored murder, plain and simple. It pains me to think my home state may be threatening to bob for corpses in that particular scum-river.

Knowing next to nothing about current CT politics, I hope that CT's sizable liberal constituency can defeat any bill that proposes Death Penalty legislation....Have Shays or Dodd or anyone else made any noises about it?

2. yikes! i think i was unclear

the bill before the state legislature currently being debated will abolish the death penalty. i'm not sure what the congressional reps think about it all. state gov is an animal all onto itself. i have to sign off for a bit. will be back soon.

i'm sure the congressional reps won't touch it becuase they don't have to.

i'm shaking. when i was this bill on the 'go list' for the house this morning, i thought , no f-ing way. it's going die on the floor. the fact that they are taking up this vote right now. unreal.

On the bright side, I don't think this sort of legislation would have even been proposed 10 years ago.

lawlor mentioned it had been a campaign issue in 1994 and that the house debated the death penalty that session. that's why i started to get my hopes up. i've been looking to find the legislation and i couldn't come up with the goods.

there are so many factors to think about.

a lot of legislators from east of the river kept bringing up mike ross. if they voted to get rid of the penalty, those now on death row would be spared with their lives. so in essence voting for repeal would be political suicide for anyone east of the river.

and he's not alone i'm sure, as a legislator who personally opposes the death penalty but would never get re-elected if he voted for the end of capitol punishment.

Since you are working with the legislature... is anybody surprised at the sky-high popularity of Rowland's right hand woman, Jodi Rell?

21. absolutely not, at least not as far as i can tell

roland's fall has been a long time coming and jodi looks like polly anna in comparison. she's a lot more accessible than he was. she doesn't keep a closed door to her office. she doesn't seem to act like a ceo, which is common in leadership. she had a big role in establishing a select committee on veterans' affairs which is a big crowd pleasing issue. she also supports stem cell research especially insofar as how it will boost the state's economy. not to mention the breast cancer battle.

it'll be interesting to see who the dems come up with to run against her.
