Same Sex Marriage in Connecticut |
|
Now that we hold a super majority in the house and senate there should be no excuse. If Democrats can't respect and promote equality in marriage than they will be no better than their repuke counterparts in my book. They should start on this early in the session!

1. What about the Republican governor? |
|
I don't know too much about CT politics these days, but how would the governor react to something like that?

That was the importance of the super majority point.

6. Snow White is out numbered |

It doesn't matter if she supports marriage equality or not. The Majority can bring the bill out and they now have the votes to over turn a Veto should she so choose. There are no excuses.

8. A number of house Dems would not vote for gay marriage |
|
They would not be able to over-ride a Rell veto.
Gay marriage should be passed, but it will not until we can get a Democratic governor.

If Democrats won't support the basic standard of equality then they are no better than Repukes. Where is the leadership? We live in a liberal state and they can't get the rest of the pack in line? With all due respect, we don't need a Democratic Governor (not that it wouldn't of been nice)with a super majority. It's time for Connecticut Democrats to show they have a spine.

11. I'm not making excuses |
|
I'm just stating that it will not happen. It should happen, and it's sad that it won't happen.
But, I'm just being realistic - civil unions were not passed in the State House by anything close to a veto proof margin, and we were close to holding a super-majority last time out. I think it was like 85-63, if I recall, and Dems held 99 seats in the House at the time. Picking up a few seats is not going to make a huge difference unless a few of the DLC type Dems in eastern Connecticut have a change of heart on the topic.
The Senate, was 1-2 votes over the 2/3 majority, if I recall. But, would that super-majority hold in the Senate if Rell vetoed a gay marriage bill? And, the same with the House - if they managed to get a super-majority, would it also hold if Rell vetoed the law?
I could definitely see them passing a bill that strengthens the civil unions law, like they did with the pro-choice law back in the 80s. If I recall, I think they passed a law that abortion could only be outlawed if passed by a super-majority, and not the regular majority.

9. Lots of Dems not supportive, unfortunately |

My state rep is among them. (Which is why I abstained from voting in that race)

12. Will be introduced by Lawlor |
|
I talked to a friend who said Rep Mike Lawlor will introduce a Marriage equality bill. If ever it is going to pass, this would be the time! Let's make sure we thanks and support Rep Lawlor.
