Best and Worst about Connecticut |
|
My list:
BEST We went with Kerry The 4 Seasons Proximity to NYC and Boston The nightlife in New Haven, Hartford (clubs, bars) The restaurants (especially in New Haven) Culture (Arts, Exhibits) The shoreline (beaches, state parks) It's where my family and friends live
WORST The republicans who run the state How one county (Fairfield) makes everyone think that everyone who lives in CT is rich (I am not one of those lucky people) Small state-Not many electoral votes It gets cold, snowy
What do you guys think?

for about a couple of years. Its one of the best areas of bport, but i still hated it. It was the only area we could afford in fairfield county and i worked in lower manhattan.

We're to be moving from Orlando to the Hartford area in about 4 months.
The only thing I like about Florida is the winter weather.

4. I-95 through Connecticut is pretty bad! |
|
Martha's home too. Also bad. But many of my friends are there and family and my little nephew, all good things to me.
I've lived in about 6 places in Ct over the years.

try any large city -- it's so much worse!
I95 is just a pit, though. Sorry you have to deal with it daily.

and my siblings and parents are still there. Can't say much good about my hometown, and ugh, it's also the Colter's hometown, but I like the Northwest part of the state and the coast near RI.

|
Edited on Wed Dec-15-04 09:22 PM by Tangledog
BEST Lots of historical sites, both here and in neighboring states Numerous colleges & universities, also museums, galleries, symphony orchestras here and there The Connecticut Jazz Festival (saw and heard a bass saxophone this year!) A lot of variety; compare Fairfield to Windham to Litchfield to the Route 5 rustbelt If that still ain't enough variety, the 3 neighboring states are also diverse & interesting Four seasons (at least some years; if we had an autumn this year someone send me a postcard about it); I couldn't live in "endless summer" The "old Yankee" and Puritan heritages mix with everything since for a certain ambience that I can't quite figure out but find interesting Some excellent libraries and interlibrary loan resources
WORST Down in my corner, morans going to the casinos & getting in the way High cost of living makes it rough for working people and young people trying to get a leg up Too many Republicans, though admittedly many of them are relatively benign

|
getting in the way, the good libraries, and the old Yankee/Puritan thing. There are a lot of great historical sites--I would particularly call out the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center in Hartford, the Prudence Crandall House in Canterbury, and the Green in Lebanon. I also love Willimantic just for being Willimantic and New London for the cool little shops popping up here and there. I don't like the sprawl and its creep toward the more rural areas or the huge disparities in wealth. CT has a pretty interesting history too--once the most inventive place on earth, given the number of patents that originated here in the 19th century!

13. Hmm, I agree with some of your choices |
|
Proximately to not just NYC & Boston, but we're also not too far from Cape Cod, Philly & Atlantic City.
The arts scene in places like Hartford & New Haven is a plus for such small cities.
On the plus side, even most of our Republicans aren't the Freeper Far Right types.
On the negative side - we haven't elected a Dem governor in almost 20 years now, despite a large majority in the state.
We have 3 big cities in Hartford, New Haven & Bridgeport that need a lot of help.

worst has to be CT drivers when it snows. they act like they've never seen snow before. One flake and everyone hits the brakes and goes 20mph on the interstate.

try living in No. Va and see people who don't know from snow. A few flakes, everyone panics, schools close. Then people abandon their cars on the middle lanes of bridges.
Other than idiots who think their big trucks and SUVs will stop as nicely as they go in bad weather, I think we do pretty well. When it snows, most of the scared little old ladies stay home. Now the rain is another story...

People don't drive like that in Maine, unless the road conditions are very bad. Of course, there is more highway traffic in CT than ME.

We can't party as hard as you so some of us are quite content with the nightlife in the Elm City.
New Haven is where I work and not to far from home so it's my hot spot.
Yes, it gets boring at times but it's also what you make of it!:hi:

I'm transplanted (you can guess from where) so that of course colors my view.
Best: Not too crowded yet Nice burbs -- good places to raise kids Culture -- theaters and museums are especially prevalent. Not too big - it's accesible
Worst: You call those beaches?

We're a bit northeast of Manchester. Not too quiet, but quieter than my old home of Newington. It's pretty good, but I miss the convenience of Newington.
