Elsmere council rejects ordinance
Majority of meeting attendees rally against proposal to fine those who can't prove residency
By MELISSA TYRRELL / The News Journal
05/13/2005

ELSMERE — After a three-hour meeting filled with tension and emotion, Carlos DiPres jumped from his seat, yelled “awesome” and started singing “God Bless America.”

The occasion was the defeat of a controversial proposal in the town of Elsmere, where hundreds of Delawareans gathered Thursday evening to voice their opinions on the ordinance.

In a 2-5 vote, Elsmere Town Council voted down Ordinance 447, which called for $100 fines for anyone stopped by police who could not provide proof of U.S. residency within 72 hours. The ordinance, proposed by Councilman John Jaremchuk, also would have charged landlords and employers $1,000 for each undocumented person they housed or employed.

Jaremchuk, however, told the Associated Press that he plans to introduce a resolution in July that would require town police to charge people suspected of being undocumented immigrants with criminal trespassing.

Jaremchuk’s defeated proposal had been widely discussed by the Latino community and beyond since first being summarized in a March town newsletter. More than 100 people filled Town Hall last month to urge the council to discard the ordinance.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

I can't believe this asshole is going to try again to pass a law that allows racial profiling. At least I feel comfortable knowing that he was overwhelmingly defeated not only by the rest of the council but the community at large that united together against this horrible bill!

1. Knew you'd be on top of this story today.
And you're a much earlier riser than I am (Gunga Din).

I see this as a microcosm of people's feelings across the nation. Being an Aquarian I can argue both sides of the issue by nature but it's going to be a difficult situation to address now that this country has waited way to long AND taken advantage of the undocumented workers for many many years already.

I suppose the latest national (misguided) attempt is the RealID cards which will also fail in most states I think. I'm not sure what the answer is at this point but it does deserve major discussion, don't you think?

Anyway - the one thing I ALWAYS notice is that the people most threatened appear to be older, overly well-fed, white males. And I don't think things will get better until our governing bodies begin to actually represent out population! I feel sure we'll all see much more of this until then.

2. One picture of Jaremchuk and I would have to agree
DOesn't he know that this illegal immigrants (which I will admit do exist) are not the cause of crime in Elsmere. If anything, illegal immigrants try to keep a low profile because they want to stay in the country. Even though they are given the shitass jobs that no one else wants (my bet is they all head up to Avondale to pick Mushrooms), it's still a better income here than back in Mexico.

Hey, we're still going to dinner at Mikimoto's on Tuesday at 5. We'd really love to have you join us.

Oh, and I'm up at 6am and I check the NJ everyday. I wanted to go last night but I had an appointment in Chadds Ford. But believe me, if Jaremchuk tries this again, I'll be there to protest!
