A record number of Delaware voters probably are headed to the polls Tuesday, with state registration rolls at an all-time high and absentee balloting already outpacing the response in the 2000 presidential year.
There now are 554,000 people registered to vote in the state, up more than 10 percent from the 503,614 registered in 2000 and 7 percent above 2002.
Democrats added about 18,200 voters this year, while Republicans added about 8,000. More than 9,480 people signed up as unaffiliated voters. That leaves 44 percent of voters registered as Democrats, 33 percent as Republicans and 23 percent as unaffiliated. The numbers show a slight gain for Democrats at the expense of the GOP from 2000.
