"The first Hispanic person to serve on the Florida Supreme Court, Raoul Cantero III, is resigning from the court in September.
The 47-year-old justice said Friday he's returning to his Miami hometown for personal reasons. He was appointed to the court in 2002 by then-Gov. Jeb Bush.
Cantero is Florida's 80th justice since statehood was granted in 1845. A native of Madrid, Spain, he is the son of Cuban exiles who fled the communist regime and later settled in Florida in the 1960s. He is a grandson of former Cuban leader Fulgencio Batista.
Cantero said recent family illnesses and his children's ages have made it important for him to return home where he plans to return to private practice."
