"William A. Graham, 84, a leading Florida businessman who developed one of the first planned communities near Miami and who directed the business operations of the nationally prominent family, died Jan. 17 of congestive heart failure and complications of multiple myeloma at his home in Miami Lakes, Fla.
Mr. Graham was the longtime chairman of the Graham Companies, a family business with interests in real estate, property management, sugar, timber and agriculture.
He was not well known outside his home state, but was a leading figure in Florida's business and civic affairs for decades. His father, Ernest R. "Cap" Graham, was the founder of the family dynasty and served as a Florida state senator.
Mr. Graham chose to spend his life in business in Florida, while two of his brothers became figures on the national stage. His older brother, Philip L. Graham, was the publisher of The Washington Post and president of The Washington Post Co. His younger half brother, Bob Graham, served two terms as Florida's governor and three terms as a Democratic U.S. senator from Florida."
