Florida leads the way in manufacturing

I wrote this LTTE today, after hearing the latest unemployment figures reported. Awaiting the flame wars in our local paper's comment section :popcorn:

Dear Editor:

The unemployment level in Florida is higher than the national average. We now have over one million people out of work. According to the statistics reported in today's news, Florida counties with the lowest unemployment rates (proportion of the population) include Liberty, Wakulla and Okaloosa.

Prison and military employers can take a lot of the credit. The incarceration rate per capita is over 7% for Liberty and also for Wakulla (over twice the statewide average, according to the Department of Corrections' 2009 figures). Okaloosa's number one employer is the military -- including all the technology and other industries that support the military bases.

President Obama wants to make this country's manufacturing sector great again. Florida is showing the way, so he should take note. We are strong in manufacturing: we take the raw material of human beings and turn them into manual-labor and fighting machines. We used to create products. Now we ARE the product.
