Miami is the nation's third poorest major city, behind only Cleveland and Detroit, while Broward ranks No. 127 in the nation, according to a report released Tuesday by the Census Bureau.
The report pegged the city of Miami's poverty rate at 28.3 percent in 2005, unchanged from the year before. Miami-Dade County's poverty rate was up slightly, to 18 percent in 2005, compared with 17 percent in 2004. Miami-Dade County's national ranking climbed to 26 from 34.
In Broward, the poverty rate increased from 10 percent to 11 percent. Broward County's national ranking rose from 140 to 127.
BUILDING BOOM
Some analysts found it discouraging that the city of Miami, in the midst of a building boom, hasn't made progress lowering its poverty rate. As recently as 2000, it had the nation's leading poverty rate, according to the Census Bureau.
