Crist calls Davis 'my congressman' _ but he's not

ASSOCIATED PRESS
October 14, 2006

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Charlie Crist told a newspaper that he's angry that gubernatorial rival Rep. Jim Davis has missed votes in Congress because Davis is supposed to be representing Crist.
But Crist's St. Petersburg home is actually in the district of U.S. Rep. C.W. Bill Young, a Republican from Largo, not in the district of Davis, who represents a Tampa district.

Crist, who is the state's attorney general and the Republican nominee for governor, made the remarks during a rare show of emotion during an interview with writers this week at The Tampa Tribune.
Crist was saying that he's mad that Davis, the Democratic gubernatorial nominee, has missed several votes in Congress.

"I have an opponent who's a nice man, but damn it, you know, he's my congressman, and he didn't show up," Crist said, according to a posting on The Tribune's politics Web log.

But The Tribune pointed out that Davis isn't Crist's congressman, a fact the Davis campaign jumped on quickly.

Davis communications director Josh Earnest said it showed a fundamental lack of understanding of Florida government.
"Charlie doesn't know who represents him in Congress, and Florida's families haven't been able to count on Charlie to represent them in Tallahassee," said Earnest.
