OCALA — Ten days before the Nov. 7 general election, Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Jim Davis swept across a Republican-dominated portion of the state, trying to pump up his base by emphasizing the differences between him and his GOP opponent, Charlie Crist.

"Everybody else is running on philosophy and God Bless America, and this guy is talking about property taxes," McKay, who recruited Davis, told a group of about 60 Davis supporters in the back yard of homeowner Rick Perry.
"This is the greatest contrast between candidates I've ever seen," McKay added.
Throughout five campaign stops, from Cape Canaveral to Spring Hill, Davis distinguished his plan to lower insurance premiums from Attorney General Crist's failure to oppose an insurance industry-friendly bill passed by lawmakers in May and signed into law by Gov. Jeb Bush.

"The Republican Party has such a stranglehold on the state capital. What people are ultimately concerned about is the impact on their pocketbook. Those issues are going to determine the outcome of this election. How we reduce property insurance. How we lower property taxes. How we improve our schools," Davis told reporters between campaign stops.

"It doesn't matter how much the rain is coming down, how much thunder and lightning. There's a storm a-coming, and it's a good storm, and it's called an election. My friends, this is the year we take our state back from the Republican Party and the special interests and reclaim it as our own," Davis said to cheers.
But he was more subtle in differentiating himself from Crist on personal matters.
Davis always mentions his wife, Peggy, and their two sons, William and Peter, and the fact that he is a homeowner whose property insurance premiums increased 40 percent this year.
He does not add that Crist, who is single, has no children and never has owned a home.

Crist is a "nice guy who's been very, very visible in the media for many, many years. But what people want for their governor is somebody who's going to stand up to those powerful insurance companies, and Charlie Crist has failed to do that," Davis said.
