WASHINGTON — Sen. Bill Nelson will join the Senate Intelligence Committee when the 110th Congress convenes next month.
Incoming Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the announcement Monday, subject to the approval of the Senate's Democratic leadership and the Democratic Caucus.
Nelson, a Democrat who serves on the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees, is on a two-week trip to the Middle East. He was notified of the appointment while in Israel.
On Wednesday, Nelson is scheduled to be the first American official to meet in Syria with President Bashar al-Assad since last week's release of the Iraq Study Group report, which called for greater diplomatic efforts to engage Syria and Iran.
