Great AJC editorial today re: Cedar Shoals wingnut Thommy Crapt |
|
http://www.ajc.com/opinion/content/opinion/1204/03poem.html Thomas Craft, the principal of Cedar Shoals High School in Athens, shouldn't be so dispirited about the quality of education that his students are receiving. Cedar Shoals students were smart enough to recognize that Craft crossed a legal line when he read them a hackneyed poem bemoaning the banishment of God from the classroom and decrying the sorry state of American teens.
Of all the poems that Craft could have read to the school's 1,500 students, he recited "The New School Prayer," an anonymous piece of drivel that surfaced about 19 years ago and won eternal life on the Internet.
Craft read the poem over the school intercom on Nov. 23, prompting justified complaints from parents and students that he trampled the constitutional divide between church and state.
"I feel like our trust was breached," said junior Maria Alzuru. "He's our principal and he's supposed to set an example. Yet, he disregarded the law."
Bravo.
