1. St. Simons/Jekyll Island |
|
It's a bit nicer/cleaner than the others. Also, you can tour the playground of the robber barons on Jeykll Island.
Closer to the Gulf, not too far from the SW corner of GA is Gulf Shores, AL - it's very nice, if you can stand the ultra rednecky Rethugs there (although there are two very nice democrats there. Shhhh don't tell anyone)

4. I like Jekyll Is. too. |

And I also recommend St. George Is. FL. The gulf water is usually clearer.
But my favorite is still Tybee Island, right off of Savannah. At the far end of the island it's still pretty bohemian, and beautiful Savannah is close enough for city type playing.

Most beautiful, quite and undeveloped (read: no condos or unchecked growth like other parts of FL), that I have seen. Rent a home down there (preferably in ST. George Plantation) for a week or a long weekend and you will not want to go home.

6. Amelia is expensive..I like Panama City....Ft. Walton Beach |
|
Pandhandle area ! The Gulf to me is much prettier than the Atlantic side and I have lived in Both places for over 10 years. I am from Ga and PC is closer to Ga if you are on the NW side.

The white sand beaches of the Florida panhandle are the best IMO.
We like the Beaches of South Walton, which is an area between Destin and Panama City. It used to be really quiet, but in the last 10 years building has boomed.
The beach is great in this area, water is usually pretty calm, great fishing. There is now a huge range in available accomodations. Everything from small inexpensive shacks a block from the beach to multi-million dollar dream homes.

8. My vote too, hands down, no contest. |

Once you've seen the incredible Gulf coast "sugar white" sand and the even more incredible CLEAR, blue and green and lavender Gulf Coast water with its abundance of life forms, you'll never look at the muddy, smelly, garbage-filled, lifeless Atlantic side again with anything butregret and remorse. Yecch.
Alas, we haven't been in years, but we used to go to Destin in the off-season (May and October were my favorite times), rent a condo for a long weekend, take or buy food for breakfasts and lunch (everyone on their own!) and go out for dinners. Heaven. These days I'd head east of Destin to some of the smaller areas, since Destin is said to be really built up.

If you haven't been in a few years, you won't recognize it. The old places are still there, but there's new ones every year. If you're familiar with 30-A, it is a bustling stretch these days.
