Any Katrina refugees sent to Athens, GA? (Re: bogus free child care) |
|
I have a former high school classmate who operates two child care centers in Athens GA. This guy is a blowhard neocon who bitches bitterly about having to pay any federal or state taxes, and especially about having to pay minimum wage and FICA to the women who work in his day care centers. He refers to his own employees as "welfare queens" which is insane, since if they're working for him, they're not collecting welfare. He also supported Saxby Chambliss and spread despicably vicious lies about Senator Max Clelland.
So NOW this blowhard is emailing around the country defending Bush's inactions re Katrina, saying that the refugees' problems are of their own making after decades of living off welfare, etc., etc But he ends his rant by telling everyone how great HE is because he's offered six months of free child care to any Katrina refugees in the area of his Athens child care centers. Given his history and greediness, I suspect he thinks he'll never be taken up on this empty gesture.
So I'd like to find out if Athens( and I know there are some great liberal support activities there - especially at the University) actually has any refugees. If so, I would sure like to provide them with a copy of this guy's promise of 6 months free daycare and make him put up or shut up.

1. I have no idea how to find out |
|
if there are any refugees there, although there may be since I understand that some have gone to Atlanta, and perhaps have moved on to places like Athens since.
You might try contacting the Red Cross. Or, if you belong to any group (such as a church) that might sponsor some of the displaced persons, tell them about this man's generous offer.
Make him put his money where his mouth is.

The red cross has the registered database even if families have been dispersed to other areas (private homes, churches, shelters).Even if they have been kind of slow getting started. You could get the word out by contacting local media (radio/tv). Maybe you could inform social services in that area of his "6 months generous offer" to serve as a sponsor

his "taxes"?
Yup, it's all "from the bottom of his heart" . . . right. :sarcasm:

and have a family from LA living in the house we just moved out of. It's my XH's family... there are 3 adult females (90,70,25 yrs) and 4 kids (3,4,5 and 7). The oldest two are supposed to be registering for school, but the mom may be interested in day care, especially if it is free.
As of last week there were several families registering their kids with the Board of Education, plus there are many soup kitchens going on to provide food for refugees. I have no idea about the numbers of people relocated here.

7. Check with local churches too |
|
Churches, Synagogues, Mosques are all helping place people in shelters. Let your fingers do the walking and see if you can find out from them about the evacuees. Maybe they can add the guy to their database to help out.
