Why no surfing at the olympics?

I think a lot of the olympic sports are dumb, & they keep adding dumber ones.

I hate: synchronized swimming, synchronized diving, rythmic dancing ( girls twirling ribbons) & some others.

I think surfing should be a competition, & then Hawaiians would win most of the medals. Aussies & Californians might also do well.

1. I think a general rule should be...NO TEAM SPORTS

other than relays and partners (which don't really count as teams anyway) team sports should be banned.

no baseball, no basketball, no field hockey, no volleyball, no soccer

Olympics are about individuals being the best in the world, striving for an elite and prestigeous award - it's NOT about a group of professional athletes being thrown together for publicity.

After that we can weed out the other worthless olympic "sports" like trampoline jumping, cycling, and walking really fast.

6. In Atlanta...

They made a special place for kayak. It could be done. On TV I saw an indoor place in Japan that produced surfable waves.
You raise a good question. Why do the events have to be in the same place? With worldwide TV it is easy to change that.
With the poor turnout in Greece it seems like a good idea.
I am sure that the loses in Greece will make your idea attractive.

8. As a surfer, . . . .

First I'd say that indoor "surfing" isn't surfing. It's no different than a waterslide on which you stand up. There's no real skill involved because the wave is 100% predictable. No self-respecting surfer would EVER consider that an event worthy of such attention.

I wouldn't want to see surfing in the oylmpics. I didn't even want to see snowboarding become an olympic sport.

10. Taking Atlanta as an example, they could have held the surfing

either at Cape Hatteras, N.C. or Cocoa Beach, Fla. I know of no surf break on the Ga. coastline.

Of course, to be a real Olympic sport, <sarcasm> they'd have to have eighteen diffent divisions: longboard, shortboard, modified longboard, big wave, and so on ad nauseam. </sarcasm>

9. Of course all our medals would be credited to the USA

California's, too. :-)

We should have had a Hawai'i team through the Territorial Era, just like Puerto Rico does. That way Duke Kahanamoku's gold medals would be ours, and they could put a giant replica of one around the surfer statue at Kuhio Beach.

11. My surfing thread.....a small attempt at Olympic humor....

Don t want to see surfing get more popular.

During the winter, I went up to North Shore, & we were in traffic for hours. In the parking lot at Sunset Beach there was a big traffic jam caused by STRETCH LIMOS filled with tourists.

Duke is rolling over in his grave. I worry about angry surfer Gods.
