19. What the hell happened on Election Day?!
I swear, I've been talking to people for over a year and so many seemed so pissed at the Bush junta. But it looks like only DU's and our families showed up to vote for John. Less of a % in '04 than for Gore in '00 and that's following one of, if not the worst administration in history. That's pathetic. Looks like we have a lot of work ahead of us, Idaho Dems. I plan to get even more involved and it'd be nice meet some compatriots and become more informed on a local and national level. If anyone knows some good ways or wants to organize, let's post and get it started. '06 is not far away and Idaho needs to escape this fog of potato fed ignorance and send a message!

5. As a native Idahoan who now lives in Washington
I say hang in there. I met several Idaho Dems this past summer and I know many who live in in SE Idaho. The R's have had such a grip for so long that it can be discouraging but there are glimmers of hope. I still spend a considerable amount of time in Stanley Basin and Southern Idaho. I still love the state for its potential and I hope it will someday reverse its political rectal-cranial inversion. Remember Idaho has a tradition of great Dems and I hope it returns.

9. Poci here
Hi fellow Idahoans,

Poci resident here. Starting grad school at ISU this fall, and I am very excited to get involved with the Bannock Democratic Party here in Poci. I lived in Idaho Falls and volunteered with the Bonneville party. I must say, there may not be many Democrats in Idaho, but the ones who are here are passionate and dedicated! I loved hearing Howard Dean saying something along the lines of being proud to say you are a Democrat in Idaho (and Utah)-I am proud, and we will make a difference.

Just got an email from the state democratic party. They want Idaho Democrats to go to Twin's airport, to give John Kerry a send off. Wish I would have known about it before, but anyone else going to go?

Boiseans, you could live near Marsing where you might be the only Democrat in the county, (but you'd have a knee-weakening view of the Owyhee mtns.)

Actually, I think I am NOT the only Dem in Owyhee county. Theres 2 houses with Kerry-Edwards signs!

My dad and mom have ISU degrees from ages ago. One of my brothers also graduated from ISU with a PharmD.

My other brother has a degree from BSU, and I have a degree from U of I. Actually, I'm still at the U of I. We're all over the state!

12. Oh, thank God. There ARE dems in Idaho!
Hello - I'm a transplant from Minnesota, living in the Boise area for four years. My husband and I have so alone here, surounded by rabid Bush supporters. I have not yet met a single person whose politics mesh with mine.

18. Hi petersgirl!
Welcome to DU (not that I'm that old here myself).

Yes, there are dems in Idaho, but they're hard to find. My parents are dems, my 2 brothers and their wives are dems, my wife is a dem, her parents are dems, my aunt and uncle are dems, six of my wife's aunt/uncles are dems. All in Idaho! Of those listed, six of those are in the Boise area. The rest of us are spread out over the state.

20. Thanks for the welcomes!
I would be thrilled if I had a fellow Dem to pal around with. There's a house about a quarter of a mile from mine that has had a Kerry sign prominently displayed on their porch for months. It's still there, and I kind of hope they never take it down. It gives me hope.

Sometimes I'm tempted to knock on their door and thank them for displaying it.

23. I'm a lonely Boise democrat
Edited on Wed Feb-09-05 10:11 PM by libodem
I'm going to be checking in more often. I've been dying to find a place to hook-up with some like minded souls. I got on the Ada county democrats email deal but haven't heard much. I want to be more active in my party. I have a big concern about the electoral college and how I don't have a voice in national elections. I think we should have our meger percentage counted. I couldn't get my 20 y/o to go vote with me because he said it wouldn't count for anything.

27. Think you're lonely...
I heard that the city of Boise itself voted for Kerry, by a slim margin and the rest of Ada drowned you out. We moved to Nampa just shy of two years ago. I think my wife and I might be actual percentage points ourselves of Democrats in Canyon County. I have Ten Commandment drivel right next door. Tttwo years and I still consider myself a Boisean at heart.

24. I'd like to move to Northern Idaho.... is it too right wing?
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 11:06 AM by suziedemocrat
It's looks like heaven. Great nature. Bike trails. White water rafting. Skiing. Art Fairs!! I'm in Indiana and hating it (although I grew up here.) I'm just afraid Idaho will be way too conservative. I've lived all over the country and my politics are to the left of Denver - to the right of Portland. I'm completely in sync with Howard Dean (who is NOT that liberal - regardless of what they say on TV - he just has the balls to do what is right.)

Also - it looks like they get a lot of snow. Does it melt quickly like Denver - or stick around forever like Indiana? Thanks!!

Please tell me what Idaho is like. I LOVE potatoes and I HATE fuc*ing corn!!!!

edit spelling errors.

26. Moved to N. Idaho 3 years ago...
Check out Sandpoint, ID. It's true that there are a lot of Conservatives here but there are a lot of Libertarians, Progressive and others who flat out don't "do" politics at all. We're talkin' "off the grid" types. There is the occasional asshole (who you merely ignore) but I've lived in communities in S. Calf. that are the same...

People pretty much mind their business.

And it is an amazing place!

32. Idaho Privatization Results
I want to start a thread on Idaho Privatization of Social
Services but I'm too new to be qualified. Sure would
appreciate one of you vets doing it for me.

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I started working in
Idaho in the early 1990s just when the privatization hysteria
started - "self reliance" and "privatizing
health and welfare programs." Now in 2008 we have almost
all social workers and counselors working on the
"billable hour," using their own cars, buying their
own gas, and getting paid only for face-to-face contact with
clients. The result is that we make half what we did before,
pay our own expenses, have no federal employment rights
because we are on contract, have no health insurance, have no
insurance for transporting clients and are withering away
socially, financially and morally. I have had collegues that
live in their cars and cheat on billing to eat.

The social welfare system in Idaho has grown larger, costs
more, and now supports a public sector of regulation and a
private sector of pure corruption. PSR (psychosocial
rehabilitation) workers baby sit clients for hours at $45-$55
per hour playing games and cards - doing "play
therapy." The public sector regulates us so completely
that it takes up to 8 hours to do the initial paperwork for
one client. We never look at the paperwork again because we
don't get paid for anything except personal contact and
wasting our time writing it and trying to make the narrative
sound like we are accomplishing something.

The only thing we are accomplishing is keeping the ever
increasing population of mentally, sick, and impoverished out
of the way of the corporate and cosmopolitan population. And,
most of us are so broke and so demoralized that we don't care
anymore. In the mean time the rich social service corporation
owners are getting richer on our backs and the social workers
and counselors will soon join the impoverished ranks of our
clients.

This is the utopia privatization beings to us all.
We need to go back to public run social services
