We'll have to wait at least a month or so to see what effect Sarah Palin has on Idaho's presidential money race.
For now, the current reports show Democratic nominee Barack Obama maintains his surprising fundraising edge over Republican nominee John McCain.
Obama has raised $422,165 in Idaho through July 31, compared to $270,772 for McCain. Of course, that July 31 date is an Alaska-sized disclaimer. It means we have no idea how McCain's selection of Palin - the Alaska governor, Sandpoint native and University of Idaho graduate - will affect fundraising in Idaho.
The August fundraising reports won't offer much of a hint, either. McCain made Palin his surprise choice on Aug. 29, the Friday before a holiday weekend and probably too late to have too much effect on the next Federal Election Commission reports, which cover August. The September reports - likely to go public in mid-October - will be telling.
