Meigs Field lives on, at least in the political aftermath of the destruction of the airport three years ago. The Meigs Action Coalition will stage its third anniversary event in memory of the bizarre event Friday. It's also a tuneup for the coming mayoralty election campaign in 2007. It's a real hot button issue for General Aviation fans in Chicago, which is about...well, now that Collins is dead, it's lost half its members.
The only thing distressing about the move is the way it was done to avoid judicial intervention. It was entirely too much like the Bushian fait accompli for my taste.

i applauded it then, i applaud it now. he tried to go through the process, he had a deal, and it was reneged on. it should never have been built there. i know a lot of regular folks used it, but it was mostly a big chunk of lake front reserved for fat cats. "forever free and clear", or whatever the law says about the lakefront. that's why ritchie can be my mayor for life. to make it a mission to complete and build on daniel burnham's plan, that alone is enough. that's not all he i like him for, but he should wear that crown jewel proudly.
