1. My husband and I went to Don Johnston's annual |

spaghetti dinner/fundraiser at the end of April. Our committee in Ogle County buys a ticket from him every year. He does quite a bit of printing for us. It was great to go to a district where there are so many well-organized Democrats.
All the prospective candidates were at the dinner. I spoke to several of them at length. They do not lack competent Democrats to fill this spot on the ballot and the seat. Mr. Sullivan took the time to explain to me what they are doing to select a candidate.
It makes no sense to me that appointed precinct committeemen should be allowed to vote in this matter. I don't know if the Lee County Democrats have ever caucused in a candidate, or recommended one to fill a seat for someone who has resigned. We have done it here. Only the elected precinct committeemen vote. We went to the trouble to run for our office and represent the voters. It seems logical that the same rules should apply to the 17th District's situation. It looks like it is in keeping with our election laws, too.
We are trying to have a Democratic precinct committeeman in every precinct here. We have appointed quite a few. Hiowever, I think people should only be appointed to their first term. Candidates should take the time to run, and to work their precincts. I don't understand why people can't take the time to get out with a petition and get their names on the ballot.
I will follow this situation with interest. The 17th District has been a safe seat for us. I would like to see that continue.

right across the River in Iowa and have been following this story closely. My gut feeling is that either Hare or Schweibert will be selected to run in place of Evans. And Schweibert has done a decent job running Rock Island, although there are parts of that town that are scary. Seems to be some dissatisfaction with Boland, who is likely the other frontrunner. No matter what, I hope they get it together soon. The Dems need to retain this seat, as well as taking the vacated Iowa first district seat. Should be an interesting year in politics here.
