Would there be a special election or would the governor appoint someone?

6. Thanks for confirming... |

gubernatorial appt.
Makes me feel a little better that his seat won't go to a repub if he wins either president or vice-president. However, I am concerned about our representation in DC while Obama is on the campaign trail. We have such a slim majority we really need ALL of our Democratic senators voting on all legislation.

10. What about a Black replacement? |
|
I know that would be a little bit like making this the "black seat" but there's a good chance that if Obama leaves the Senate for the presidency, there will be no African-Americans in the Senate. (That could change, but it doesn't sound like any major black candidates are running for competitive seats in '08.)
If they do appoint a black replacement, who would it be? Jesse Jackson, Jr? Or is he too liberal? Someone else...?

It used to be her seat. That would be very controversial though and she wouldn't have an easy re-election.
There are a lot of black leaders in the state who could do it. I heard someone suggest Jesse White. I'd love to see Donnie Trotter do it but he might be too liberal. Its too bad there aren't more elected black leaders from downstate to choose from, since that's where a lot of the swing voters are.

12. I could see Jesse Jackson, Jr. as well. |
|
He is well-known. And when his current Congressional seat was filled by a special election, there would be no problem electing a Democrat as his replacement.
I still think it would be better to look downstate, even though it undoubtedly means filling Obama's seat with a white replacement. Downstaters have enough reasons to resent Chicago.

14. Oh God! NOT Braun again! |

You have NO idea how much I am shuddering at the very idea.
She was fine as long as she stayed in the Legislature. The minute that woman got out off work, however she was a complete PR failure. She NEVER seemed to grasp that she was under a magnifying glass, I don't think she even realized that she was under any kind of scrutiny. NO way she was ready for Prime time that first time around.
She had an awful time even finding anyone to take her signs downstate when she ran for re-election, and she lost to Fitzgerald. He was never even allowed out in public by his handlers during that campaign because he was such an awful candidate and HE BEAT HER!
Oh man. I just can't stop shuddering at the thought. I really can't.
