Good Lord, Bernard Stone is a nasty, nasty man.. |
|
He doesn't even know how to accept victory graciously.... http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/clout_st/2007/04/stone_thanks_su.htmlThe Tribune might call this venting, I call it totally obnoxious.

Back when Target built its store at Howard and Kedzie (on the Evanston side), Stone put a barrier up the middle of Howard Street -- ostensibly to control traffic -- but really to make access to the store difficult. It didn't work, people went around the barrier and the store did well. Stone was eventually forced to take the barrier down, but showed himself for the ass he is.
It was a stupid thing to do and made driving on Howard Street inconvenient for a time.

the arrogance you describe is nothing new to me. I'm sure that Bernie Stone had the "feet on the ground" out, big time, yesterday.
Politics in Chicago and Cook County will never change. It's all about turnout on the day and obviously Bernie Stone had the better organization.
I witnessed this myself yesterday as an election judge in Oak Lawn. We had a race for Trustee/Alderman in my district in Oak Lawn. The incumbent, who works for our DINO congresscritter in the IL 3rd, had major help from people who live and work in the 23 ward in Chicago and he won relection overwhelminghly. I can guarantee you that Bernie Stone had the same army of people in his election.
In fact in his "victory" speech, Bernie Stone, acknowledged the fact that "Da Mayor", Lil Richie, had helped him and good ole Bernie dissed Jan Schowsky (please excuse my spelling) bragging that the Congresswoman would never have the resources (ie., the machine) that he has.
I know how you feel, but unforuntely, as long as people in Chicago and the burb's livliehoods depend on their "political jobs", with either the City of Chicago or Cook County, nothing will ever change. They'll do what they're told to do, instead of the right thing.
I feel right now like I'm beating my head up against the wall, but until these "people" finally get it (when they're laid off or lose their jobs because the money isn't there to pay them) they'll never learn.
"Machine politics" is alive and well in the City and Cook County, sad fact that it is...

Nothing like dissing a sitting Congressperson-for-life. I've known Jan for decades, and she's not at all the vengeful type, but I can't help but think that it would be a shame if there were, oh, I don't know, maybe a federal investigation into this creep somewhere down the road.
It's still got a way to go, however, to top my all time least gracious victory speech. After defeating a Mayor-supported incumbent in a dem primary for one of our city councils down here in Champaign County, the winner was quoted in the paper as saying: "A mistake was made, which has now been corrected."
You could practically hear the sick, squishy thud and cracking noise that party unity makes when it hits the ground after being thrown off a building. I swear, the impact set off car alarms in the parking lot...
