State Sen. Debbie Halvorson (D-Crete) announced Tuesday that she will run for the 11th District congressional seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Jerry Weller.
Halvorson made the announcement after spending last weekend in Washington, D.C., where she met with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and talked to representatives of Emily's List, a group that backs women candidates who are abortion rights supporters.
Halvorson, 49, is the Senate majority leader and top assistant to Senate President Emil Jones (D-Chicago). She is in the middle of her fourth term in the Senate, representing a district that covers four counties, including Will and Cook.
In her statement, Halvorson said she's launching a grass-roots campaign on behalf of the hard-working families of the district. Voters deserve accountability, leadership and a strong voice in Congress, she said.
"In Congress, I'll work to bring our troops home from Iraq, and I'll continue my fight for affordable health care and to strengthen our local economy," Halvorson said. "It is time we put Illinois families first, not D.C. special interests."
