A little more than six months after it first implemented a ban on performance-enhancing drugs, the Illinois High School Association announced Monday that athletes will be subject to random drug tests beginning next fall.
The decision was finalized after the IHSA Board of Directors monthly meeting.
In a news release, the organization stated that it will test programs in the “state series,” which includes all postseason competition.
The testing policy follows the July 1 ban and the results of surveys completed by member school principals during the past five weeks. Illinois will join New Jersey, Texas and Florida as the only states that test high school athletes for steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs.
