ROCKFORD — A man who was apparently shooting at a stray dog instead shot an acquaintance and then fled before police arrived at the scene. snip

“It seems like it was an accident,” he said. “The dog was apparently bothering some people and he shot at it but missed and hit his friend.” snip

Police are looking for the shooter, whom, Scheffels said, is likely to face charges.

8. Not exactly Atticus Finch we're talking about here
But I suppose calling the local animal control is so totally out of the question that there's no other recourse for a law-abiding citizen but to get out his shootin arn.

10. I once had to plead with my neighbor not to shoot at raccoons between our houses
He is both a heavy drinker and the police commissioner.

I need to write a screenplay.

14. you are joking right?
There are alternatives to both calling animal control AND to shooting a dog.

How about offering it some food, taking it in and giving it a temporary home? Or finding a shelter that does that -- there are people in *every* state that foster homeless dogs until homes can be found.

16. The account is sketchy
It says the dog was "bothering" folks, so it's unclear just what sort of threat the dog may have posed. I'd leave it to the professionals to deal with the dog, whether it's animal control or a sheltering agency.

18. I'd bet the dog
was a vicious Llhasa Apso. His friend was trying to hold down the crazed animal while the guy with the gun took a shot. The scope wasn't callibrated.

15. maybe the friend jumped in front of the poor dog
to protect it.

I probably would have. THere are alternatives to shooting a stray. Like giving the poor thing a home, even a temporary one.

Gee, maybe we should start shooting homeless, stray people too? That'll solve the problem.

20. Lemme guess--the dog was really tall, the friend was a midget, and he was no marksman.
I'd also offer the observation he was no mental giant--but that much is pretty evident.

Stupid is gonna hurt.

24. "seems like an accident", but the shooter fled.
I'm guessing he didn't want police knowing how drunk he was.
