If you could say one thing to Pat Quinn, what would it be? |

If you could buttonhole Pat Quinn for 30 uninterrupted minutes, what would you tell him or what advice would you give him? Remember, we want Pat to succeed in governing our state well... at least I HOPE that's what we all want.

1. I actually had that opportunity 8 years ago |
|
Back when he was the Lieutenant Gov candidate. I was running for State rep in a republican area and we were at an opening of the DuPage Dems office for a press conference. He was very helpful and informative to me.
If I had that opportunity now I wold want him to stand up to Madigin on income taxes and campaign finance reform. I don't know if it would work but that is in my humble opinion the most important changes we need.

I'd say....
"Pat-- you're a good, decent, honest and compassionate person, and those are wonderful qualities for a governor to have. Now, however, you need to learn to tell Speaker Madigan to 'Go to Hell!', on occasions, and MEAN IT! YOU are the elected Governor of Illinois, not him! If he then 'shoves' you, shove him back, but twice as hard; eventually, he'll likely respect you for it, because an examination of his history shows pretty clearly that he despises weakness and vacillation. In other words, Pat, you're governor now in your own right, so act like it!".
And then I'd give him a big hug.

Anyone who stands up to Madigan loses in the long run.

6. I'm not suggesting the he be a damned fool about it. |
|
Madigan's far too good of a politician to not see the advantages in having at least a decent, civil relationship with the Governor. The main thrust of my advice is simply to demonstrate to the Speaker that you don't intend to be his doormat, and that you'd much prefer to be his ally, if not necessarily his friend or confidante.

8. Fire everyone Blagojevich hired. |
|
Raise income taxes. Draw a Congressional map that removes four Republicans from Congress.
