2. From a lifelong South Side Cub fan, congratulations |
|
to every Sox player and fan.
Yeah, I saw Al Lopez sitting in the stands tonight and he really does look great for a 97 year old.
There were fireworks exploding all over Oak Lawn tonight when the game was over and from the coverage on Channel 5, the celebrations will be going on well into the wee hours at various South Side watering holes.
Now, all the Sox have to do is beat whoever manages to win the NL pennant. I'm kinda hoping for the Cardinals. I'd love to see the Sox beat the Redbirds in the Series as any self respecting Cub fan would.
GO SOX!!!!

14. Roland Hemond Needs Another Suit! |
|
It was great to see him sitting in the stands since he was the man who traded Lamar Hoyt for a kid named Guillen in '85. I've seen lots of Sox greats over the past couple weeks...Landis, Pierce, Aparicio, Melton, Baines, Raines, Cora, Walker and so on...that really gave this team a feel of tradition it never had before.
I went to my first game in 1964...when I saw Pete Ward (with the upside down 8) set off that scoreboard (actually scared the shit out of me the first time), I was hooked. I tried being a Sox & Cub fan ('69 broke my heart), but one the Sox brought on Harry Carey to do the games in '71, I never looked back.
The only regret is my father was born in 1918...a year after the last Chicago pennant and was a big baseball fan and he was never able to experience this.
A :toast: to all Chicago baseball fans...seems like every time the Sox have a good season, the Cubs follow up with one of their own the next. Here's looking forward to a second '06 cross-town series.
Cheers...
