The pilot, whose identity has not been released, reported an engine running rough about 9 p.m.
The pilot told the tower, "No, I do not want to declare an emergency," Central Illinois Regional Airport manager Carl Olson said during a news conference shortly after midnight.
The six-seat plane, headed from Peoria to Smithfield, N.C., was going to land at Central Illinois Regional Airport because of the problem, but the tower lost track of the plane and called the fire department, Olson said.
He described the craft as a light twin-engine plane, but said he did not know the identifying tail number. Coroner Beth Kimmerling said workers recovered one body. Authorities described the crash site as near the intersection of Towanda-Barnes and Ireland Grove roads."
