I traveled down to Corydon and back up from Santa Claus for a trip one time and I just thought that area was sooooo pretty. You get to be near the colleges, the caves, the parks, and all the little tourist traps around down there!

Pardon me, but I'm the one in no man's land between Indianapolis and Chicago!!!! Nothing but flatlands and cornfields.

53. Only Locally

Most people in Loogootee still call themselves Democrats. And they vote for Democrats for local offices. But for US Senate, House and Presidency, Republicans nowadays carry the city and the surrounding area by huge margins. Because everybody knows that national Democrats are baby-killers who are going to take their guns.

We just have to ignore the failure of Democrats to take their guns when they controlled both houses of Congress and the Presidency during Clinton's first two years in office.

We also have to ignore the failure of Republicans to remove controls on their guns during their control of both houses of Congress and the Presidency for three of the four years W has been in office.

50. A bunch of Arvins?

Another Loogootee ex-pat here. Actually I'm a proud graduate of Rutherford Elementary. Then LHS in '80 and IU in '84. After a few months in Indy moved to the suburbs of Chicago in '85 then finally to Chicago proper in '87 where I still reside.

It took a heck of a long time, but I suppose I'm more Chicagoan than Hoosier now. Still get down there most holidays to visit the folk and wander the farm. And I get the Loogootee Tribune courtesy of my parents.

There is no God but Knight, and Butcher is his prophet.

54. That's four years before St John's burnt down.

I know my mother's family went to St. John's. And I think my father's did as well. So wouldn't have any family members in your class.

Actually, I can't think of anyone I know whose family went to LHS. Protestants were such a small minority when I was growing up that I just assumed everyone was Catholic.

That was, of course, a pretty ridiculous assumption. I suppose Protestants just kept silent when folk talked about anything church related, and I just didn't notice. Kinda sad, but better than noticing and remarking too much on it I suppose. I wore my atheism proudly on my sleeve in those days, but during the 70s nobody cared.

Nowadays, a neighbor recently refused to sell my father some land because he is an atheist. I get lectured and screamed (what's up with that?) at. And one relative and one former friend have forbidden me from coming around their children since it is assumed that I, as an atheist, must be a sexual pervert. I wish I were stretching some of this to make a point. But sadly I am not.

Which is why there isn't much chance of me moving back to Loogootee ever again.

33. I'm in Bloomington
Finishing up my Ph.D. at IU. I grew up in Texas and went to undergrad in Boston and have been pleasantly surprised at what a nice place B-ton is to live. (Not that I ever expected to live here *quite* as long as I have...lol! Maybe living in a nice environment makes it seem a little less necessary to rush through; well, that and the horrible academic job market.)

99. Child of one. And will be visiting sometime in the near future.
But not for fun. Dad went to Purdue.

We're headed to the area soon, but not entirely sure when. My great-grandfather's dying; he lives in Greentown, just east of Kokomo (which is where I'm from.) So since we've said good bye, we'll only go back for the funeral, and to settle the estate, which is a mess in and of itself. (What does one do with 1000 acres of mostly organic farmland when the reason it's organic is because the entire family's too cheap to pay for fertilizer when it's coming out of the cow for free?)

I'm in Colorado now.

67. south-side Indy
If you get a chance today, greet a co-worker or friend with a 'Cheney'. It's become all the rage among friends.

"G'mornin' Chris. Go fuck yourself?"

"Mornin' Mark! Sure did. You?"

Or use it as a way to end voice-mails.

"...so I'll give you a call from the road --- probably between 3 and 3:30. Fuck yourself."

I just moved out here from WA State last January, so I'm VERY new to Hoosier politics! Unfortunately I can't drive, straight do not have transportation, so I can't get very involved in anything. :(

75. Bloomington and Indy
My time is split between Bloomington and Indianapolis. Bloomington seems more friendly - more Kerry/Edwards bumper stickers and yard signs. Home in Indy is "Bush" country.

76. Welcome to DU!
:hi:

I also split my time between the same two cities. For the longest time I didn't see any Kerry/Edwards signs or stickers in Indy - but have begun to see more and more - in the southeast and east part of Center Township. No illusions, however, that Indy is anything other than overwhelmingly bush. Then again, six years ago, it was unthinkable that a democrat would ever be Mayor of Indianapolis...

84. Indiana Census results: Sasquatch outnumber Democrats
Edited on Tue Nov-02-04 01:55 PM by aikidoodler
Indy east-sider here (though I was raised in the wilderness surrounding New Market, Indiana --a town small enough to have "Welcome to New Market" on both sides of the signpost)

It's great to find that not everyone in this backwards state are Bushbots. I would love to see Indiana go blue, but I don't see this as particularly likely. I'd be shocked to see Kerry get within an eight-point margin.

Edited to add:
...but I would love to be proved wrong.

106. Clarksville, Indiana checking in.
Right across the dirty Ohio from Louisville, Ky. I frequent the KY boards since I'm originally from Louisville and really don't know many people over here. But two years here and I know who all the dems are. We actually have alot more dems in southern Indiana than I expected. And were growing. So, work on your areas and maybe in 06 we can have a little more success. I'm still pissed about the Baron Hill results. I think he should have won. I worked on his campaign and everyone I spoke with was voting for him. I guess it just wasn't enough.
