Cincinnati is a southern city just happens to be in a Midwest state.
A TV station there played 'Stolen Honor' a night or two before th election.

think that it was no different then Kentucky. I'll amend it to the Mississippi of the north as well. It fits better. Flatlanders in camouflage hats. Though Indibama is easier to say. Georgia has Atlanta perhaps that makes them entirely different. Indy and Atlanta just aren't on the same plane. Plus republicans down there are of a different stripe, their the old aristocratic plantation type. In Indiana repugs are entirely something else.

having just read that voters in Alabama recently upheld portions of their constitution that allow segregated schools and poll taxes. Opponents of removal of this language claimed that removing this language from their constitution would lead to huge court ordered tax increases to fund schools. This was defeated by 1,850 votes out of 1.3 million cast. Does anyone not believe the code word of "family values" is simply a continuation of "Jim Crow" segregation? Plus the wish "that we live again in the time when you could challenge someone to a duel"? Forget 2008 the next election is 2004 and it appears our challenge is clear.

this is NOT confined to southern Indiana. When these remarks originate from keynote speakers of the Republican National Convention. Do an overlay of a red states map with the Confederacy and pro-slavery territories.

13. "Middle Finger of the South" |
|
I've heard that a few times, and I've always thought it was funny. To me, it means that Indiana isn't a proper part of the south, but so many Hoosiers love so much to think it is that they are almost militant about it.
I've also heard Bloomington referred to as the "Berkeley of the Midwest", but I'm not sure I'd go that far.

I'd say Madison, WI gets the nod for the Berkley of the midwest. I used to live in Bloomington. Progressives seemed to be loosing at that time. Downtown started to transform into corporate chains and the strip malls went up on the highway.
But pretty much every progressive town claims to be the Berkley of whatever region. The town I live in now claims to be the Berkley of the east, but there are others that probably fit better.

15. Bloomington = Boulder of the Midwest maybe??? |
|
I grew up near Lafayette and went to IU. I think over 50% of Indiana might have a southern mentality - but there are SOME cool people here. Plus - Indiana is so middle of the road - both Lugar and Bayh are pretty much right down the center. I don't think it's fair to rag too much on good ole Indiana. It's incredibly boring here and behind the times and intellectualism does not seem to be held in high regard - but it is NOT Mississippi. And I've lived in Oregon, Colorado and Florida and heard much more openly racist comments at work in those states than I have ever heard in Indiana. I've been substitute teaching here lately (Laid of from IT) and the kids don't seem racist at all. (I'm not black - but racism is a pet issue of mine.)
My slogan is "Indiana - a great place to watch TV."
