For folks going to Khephra's funeral
Weather permitting, I'm going down for Khephra's funeral on Saturday. I feel a little weird going to the funeral of a person I never actually met, but that's life in the internet age.

The thing is that I don't know anyone in Khephra's family, and I also have never met any of my fellow DUers in person so none of you will know me by sight and I won't know any of you either. Are you guys planning to meet up at the hotel or wherever before the service and head over, and if so, will someone PM me and tell me where it is? I just feel like I would rather do the whole "Oh, so YOU'RE the Plaid Adder!" thing before actually getting to the funeral home.

Also, I will be driving down and I have a station wagon, so I can ferry 4 or 5 people from the hotel to the funeral home if y'all need transporation.

See you there unless there's a blizzard,

The Plaid Adder

1. Hi Plaid,
Here is all the info ~

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=172&topic_id=5171&mesg_id=5171

Rick Myers has been handling the hotel block, you can PM him to see if anyone is checking in prior to going to Flanner/Buchanan.

Please plan to say a few words at the service if you're up to it, MommaKef would like that, as would Scott.

Thanks !

2. My condolences to Khephra's family
I didn't know Khephra had passed away.

But from her posts,
I know she's in a better place now.

Sincerely,
James

3. I haven't been involved in the organizing - but...
I think it's a good idea to have a place to meet beforehand.

The Funeral Home is at 325 East Carmel Drive which is right off of Keystone (and essentially the same as 126th St. I think).

There are an abundance of restaurants around where people could meet, have lunch or whatever.

Dooley O'tolle's sounds interesting - I haven't been there - it would be convenient.
162 E. Carmel Drive

Other options on East Carmel Drive include:

Fazoli's 465 E. Carmel Dr.

Steak & Shake 635 E. Carmel Dr.

4. Dooley's is nice ...
Also, just south of 126th St (a block or so) off Keystone on 116th, there is:

Macaroni Grill http://www.macaronigrill.com/menu/default.asp?Unit_ID=001%2E009%2E0258

O'Charleys (an Applebee's sort of place) http://www.ocharleys.com/locations/default.asp?state=IN#Carmel

Longhorn Steak House

Panera Bread (sandwich cafe)

Chipotle (Mexican chain - no website)
and
Carrabas (Italian - no website)

6. I like Panera
Seems like a good meeting place - has reasonable lunches - they don't appear to contribute to Republicans. :)

I guess it is also just west of Keystone even though the address is:

2476 East 116th Street

I guess it must number based on a different starting point?

7. It's in a strip mall
I work right near there - it's literally back to back with Keystone.

The urban planners up here were crack addicts - none of the street routes/names/numbering makes any sense.

If I recall correctly, it's about a block and 1/2 from Flanner/Buchanan.

:)

8. I rather we hold the wake at a place where alcohol is served
with all due respect to Kef who did have problems on that. I grew up in an Irish-American foster home, so I know what a proper wake is supposed to look like.

9. The wake will be at the hotel after the service ...
This is a place for out of town DU'ers to meet prior to the service and maybe grab a bite if they've been on the road.

Les assured us there will be liquor at the wake.

He needs ideas on what others might bring, and a tentative headcount, though ...

17. Challah is in its tinfoil ready for transport
Not sure I will be able to stay for the wake but I can hand it off to someone post-service.

See you guys there,

5. I'm trying to get a headcount of sorts
The hotel where Rick is getting the block of rooms has a room that we can use for meeting after the Service if we so desire. If we go that route, we are going to try and have a wake. All suggestions/options are open at this point so feel free to post them here or PM me.

10. I will be coming from the Convention Center in downtown Indy
Would someone please PM me to let me know if you decide to meet beforehand? I was planning on being at the funeral home at 1:00 to pay respects, but I cannot stay for the service because my parents are coming to visit.

I was actually thinking we could all wear a ribbon of some kind to show our participation in DU. Would that work?

11. A ribbon would be a good idea
and that way we would know who to talk to. Still hope I will get the chance to meet up with folks prior to, though. I don't know the area, so I will just turn up to whatever place people settle on.

Thanks,

The Plaid Adder

13. Noon more or less
on Saturday @ Panera - for people who want to meet ahead of the visitation and have lunch or whatever.

Panera Bread (sandwich cafe)

Just west of Keystone - the address is:

2476 East 116th Street

I'll make a sign or something.

14. It's in the Merchant's Square 'Shopping Plaza'
Edited on Thu Jan-13-05 09:44 PM by hippiechick
.. if you're coming north on Keystone, it will be a left turn onto 116th Street, then just past Wendy's and Hardee's, there's an entrance to Merchant's Square. Panera will be on the Keystone Avenue side of the Square - around a little jag past the Q-doba.

... if you're heading east on Carmel Drive, you can turn right immediately past Steak N Shake and that access road will take you a block, past a Pier One, right up to Panera's front door.
