Question about an Indy school
Hi folks I am not from Indy but my sister lives there with her family and was talking to her on the phone last night. We were talking about her kids and how her oldest is about to go to kindergarten.

She was telling me that her eldest, who is 5 yrs. old, had to "interview" for a spot at the school she wants to send him to. The school is called "Heritage Christian School".

Who ever heard of an interview for a 5 year old to get into to Kindergarten?

It sounded odd to me.

To put it in perspective my sister and her husband are typical freepers and gladly eat up Faux News regularly. Despite that we get along great and I love her (and her family) dearly.

And so my question to all of you in Indy is, is this a good school? Any issues with it?

The school seems ok. I googled it for any info and came up with not much.

I do have a few concerns about my nephew turning into some indoctrinated freeper zombie but this is really out of my hands.

Sadly, the poor kid may turn out believing creationism supersedes evolutionary biology. See this under class descriptions:

"Life Science:
This course is designed to cover the scientific method, classification of all living things, introduction to cells, heredity, creation and evolution. This course will also take an in depth look at the plant and animal kingdoms.

The course is geared to cover many areas of science while teaching with a Christian philosophy. This course will broadly cover topics that will be studied more in depth in later years."

Is my concern justified or should I just shut my pie hole and let my sister raise her child as she sees fit?

1. Actually interviews are common for private schools for Kindergarten
Back in '90 I interviewed at lots of Indianapolis schools - some preschools, some private schools for kindergarten. I mean, it wasn't a formal interview, but just the counseler talking to me.

As for Heritage Christian - I used to live in Indianapolis and definitely heard of it - ran against them in cross country a number of times, also competed against them during speech and debate. There were some nice kids. In general, I wasn't all that impressed with the kids that came out of the school - there were some who seemed very smart and nice, but a lot of the rest didn't seem particularly bright or major thinkers - but what do I know? I didn't actually know anybody at the school so it could have just been a general impression. I found that the kids in Indianapolis I was most impressed in (keep in mind this is all high school) were kids from North Central, some kids from Lawrence Central (both large public high schools), SOME kids from Carmel High School (large public school in richest suburb - a good school by the stats but I found in general the students weren't that bright, obviously with some exceptions.) Also some kids from Brebeuf (the most prominent Jesuit school in the city) and Park Tudor (the most elite private school - lots of snobs and good-for-nothing rich kids but also a lot of really smart, thoughtful kids as well - number of friends who went there.)

5. didn't know that
My wife and I haven't had kids yet so we don't know the drill with schools yet.

When my sister said the word "interview" I was just a little worried. But you're probably right that it's more like a meeting. Boy meet school, school meet boy.

My sister also said they almost never turn anyone away so I just think the work interview might be a little misplaced.

Oh well.

2. I have a sort of Freeper brother
who raised his kids in a school like that near Indy.

The church that the school linked to promoted the stupid idea that the earth is 6000 years old and that dinosaurs lived within that time. I also know the school website linked to a dinosaur site that was more accurate. I don't know what the kids were taught.

It might not hurt to try a little conversation now - before your nephew starts school and then be prepared to drop it. ('Cause it won't do any good later).

6. I used to play against HC in soccer and bball
when I was at Orchard (the private school for kids of rich, but progressive parents). From what I've heard, it is pretty fundamentalist, but not as bad as Bethesda Christian, this Baptist school in Brownsburg.

But hey, it's a "christian" school, still.

Huge campus.
