GOP tax plan: Shift burden to incomes

Gov. Mitch Daniels and Republican leaders in the General Assembly are lining up behind a plan that would take more out of Hoosiers' paychecks to reduce Indiana's reliance on property taxes.

Local income tax rates could nearly double over five years under this far-reaching tax policy change meant to ease the state's budget crunch and find other ways of paying for schools and local government services.

Every taxpayer would be affected, but not everyone would end up paying more. Winners would include farmers, seniors living on fixed incomes in nice homes, homeowners in fast-growing suburbs and big corporations.

Losers would include most small-business owners who report their profits on individual tax returns and homeowners with higher or rising incomes, especially those living in neighborhoods with stable property taxes.

... and I thought it was only us Democrats who were supposed to be tax-obsessed ?

1. Republicans are very tax-obsessed.
Only they consider all taxes to be bad taxes. A lot of people particularly resent property taxes, especially if they no longer have children in the public school system.

What most people don't get is that the basic intention of taxes is to use that money to pay for things which promote the common good, such as good schools, police, fire departments, roads. The current crop of Republicans apparently sees no good in any of those things, and wants every last bit of them to be turned over to the private sector.

So far they're being only moderately successful.

2. Plus with property taxes
Even if you don't have kids in the system, you still have a stake in the system in the form of an educated and informed workforce and citizenry.

But that's asking a capitalist to think long-term and asking a Republican to think about someone besides him or her self. Ain't gonna happen.

That's why I hate Capitalists AND Republicans.
