Daniels is apparently too good for the Governor's Mansion
Did you all hear about this? What a stuck up son of a ...

here are some comments on it

http://www2.indystar.com/opinion/letters/

Daniels insults state by not moving into mansion
The governor of Indiana should reside in its capital city. When Indianapolis was laid out in 1821, the original governor's mansion was located in the center of what is now Monument Circle. That location did not long endure, because the then governor's wife did not want the public to see her laundry.

Governor abandons urban Indianapolis
I was very discouraged to read that our new governor will be choosing to live in Carmel rather than the governor's mansion. It is crucial that he show solidarity with residents of urban Indianapolis. Instead of choosing to remain close to our many challenges with respect to growth, safety, and education, he is taking the easy course of joining the suburban sprawl that compromises the value and vibrancy of our city center.

Let Daniels live where he wants to live
I am perplexed at the article regarding the governor's mansion. Here is a man who earned his personal wealth through hard work and we get a story regarding his choice of residence. So what!

Daniels can't claim to be an average guy
The governor's mansion is nicer and more expensive than the overwhelming majority of Hoosier homes, but not nice enough for our new governor. He has the right to live wherever he wants, but he can't at the same time claim to be just your average guy. Will the new Daniels' mansion have a deep fryer for Mitch's tenderloins?

2. If he wants a mansion, Hilbert's is available ...
He'll probably not want to pay property taxes on it, either - because he's the Governor. He'll come up with some bullshit excuse that it's a 'public place' or something ...

Oh, and where's the next Governor supposed to live ?

3. let him (or her) live in their own house
and pay their own bills.

I think its silly that tax money pays for an official residence, especially since governors are stinking rich anyway.

I say sell the mansion and let every gov find their own place to live.

4. Frank had a nicer house in Old North than 4601 N. Meridian.
Not sure if Judy and him sold when he was elected or not. point being, 4601 was plent good for the Obannons, it ought to be good enough for Our Bitch Mitch.

6. point is...
my post isn't about "good enough"...it's about "who cares?"

Why do our tax dollars pay for a rich person's residence, utilities, renovations, redecorations, etc? Why?

That's pointless. Let them pay their own way. Mitch not wanting to live in the gov mansion could be the only thing he wants that I approve of for the next 4 years.

Let's see, he does NOT want to spend a million of our tax dollars to repair and renovate the mansion. What's wrong with that again?

That mill would go a long way to better education, roads, lower taxes, whatever.

9. That's what I was thinking...
Yeah, it'd be great if the money did go for something useful, but we all know that it won't.

10. of course not
but what does that have to do with anything?

The point is, why care about him living in the governor's mansion?

11. Because he's essentially insulting every governor before him
and the people of this state - who 'elected' him ... by saying that the house (which represents the office he - as a servant to the people- holds) is substandard for HIS tastes ... as if he's too good to live in a mere commoners' abode.

"All Hail the Mighty Mitch", y'know ?

12. how?
I understand what you're posting...but not the reasoning behind it.

I just don't see it as an insult because, I repeat...who cares? Aren't there more important things to harp on?

17. It is a nice old house.
Most of them in the Old Northside are.

I lived in Herron-Morton at one time. first, over at 19th and Central and then up at 22st and Talbott.

... we've been watching the Estate drama unfold with alot of interest.
I'd like to go to the auction but I probably couldn't even afford to bid on his damn tupperware. And I'd also be opposed to actually paying money to anything associated with that bastard after the ratfucking most of the employees here have gotten over the last 5 years ...

15. That would be fine...
then Hamilton County will have to spread the taxes that he doesn't pay with the other property owners.

Maybe someone down there can rake this up in the local newspaper.

18. Saturday: Daniels shelves Carmel home
Edited on Sat Feb-12-05 10:08 AM by hippiechick
Typical Pug .... governs by polls, not by principle. :eyes:

No 'For Sale' sign will be placed on governor's residence, either, he tells media.

Carmel building authorities recently approved plans for a 22,000-square-foot home -- with 12 bathrooms and a six-car garage (who the fuck needs that much space ???) -- for the Danielses in the Laurelwood subdivision. -- The Star / 2005 file photo

Indiana Constitution Article 6
Year enacted 1851; year amended 1998
State officers; residence
SECTION 5 (b)
"The Governor shall reside at the seat of government."

The groundbreaking for Gov. Mitch Daniels' Hamilton County dream home will have to wait.

"The whole thing's sort of on hold," Daniels said Friday.

In the meantime, the governor said, he and first lady Cheri Daniels will continue to live in their Geist home, though he plans to spend at least some nights in the state-owned official governor's residence on Meridian Street.

At a news conference in which he was asked as many questions about his living arrangements as about the state budget, Daniels also stressed that no "For Sale" sign will be stuck in the lawn at the governor's residence.
