The Washington Township Schools superintendent apologized this morning and withdrew his comments about Gov. Mitch Daniels being a liar.
Eugene White offered his apology after meeting with school board members of the school district in northern Marion County for an hour and a half in a closed-door meeting. "The governor offered me a mulligan yesterday," White said after leaving the meeting. "I accept and offer him my apology."
School board members offered brief statements in support of White and his apology. Daniels is an alumnus of the district's North Central High School. At a meeting of editors and reporters at The Indianapolis Star on Thursday, White said Daniels had sensationalized the state of education in Indiana in his recent State of the State speech...
On Friday, Daniels said he assumed White was having a bad day and offered White a mulligan, a golf term for a do-over. Daniels said he has always considered White a gentleman. The Washington Township school board decided to meet on the issue today, declaring an emergency that could disrupt the district's operations to be able to waive the 48-hour notice that state law normally requires.
School board Vice President Cynthia "Cid" McNeilly said White's statements of apology were sufficient to represent the district and the board's views. "I have full confidence in the superintendent."
