Indianapolis poll has Kerry leading Bush |
|
A new poll of Marion County (Indianapolis) voters conducted by Howey Political Report/TeleResearch shows some surprisingly good numbers for Democrats. In this poll Bush has a shockingly low 38% approval rating. That's very low for a county that's split fairly evenly between R's and D's.
These results also contrast sharply with the statewide Indianapolis Star poll released last week showing Kerry trailing by 20 points or so. If Kerry wins Indy by this margin he has a shot to win Indiana. Wouldn't that be fun?
President:
George W. Bush, Republican 39%
John Kerry, Democrat 47%
Ralph Nader, Independent 5%
Uncertain 9%
Among Independents Kerry leads Bush by 49% to 30%.
Governor:
Mitch Daniels, Republican 37%
Joe Kernan, Democrat 49%
Uncertain 14%
Among Independents Kernan leads by 47% to Daniels 29% leaving 24% undecided

I'm originally from Indy and I gotta say - it's a pretty red town in a very red state, but dammit I HAVE to believe that good ol' Hoosier common sense could come through and Kerry may just have a shot. But only because Bush has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING RIGHT.

Don't bet the family jewels on Hoosier intelligence! Bush/Daniels has a powerful flack in Indianapolis Star (Quayle-owned rag)!

well, you are right that the Indpls Star has a stranglehold on the agenda here (i live in Indy too btw). that's why i am surprised by these numbers.
Mitch Daniels will be tough for Kernan to beat, but think of the coattails if Kerry is just competitive with Bush. Dems have been winning the Statehouse with relative ease even when the R's presidential candidate takes the state by double digits.

Remember that MARION county is the CITY proper. This is where VERY HIGH concentrations of poor/working class folk live. Had they polled the SURROUNDING communities of Carmel, Geist, Zionsville and Fishers I think you would have gotten a different result. This is effectively the difference between Julia Carson's district and Dan Burton's district.
But I agree, with one point. INDIANA IS IN PLAY!!!! Hoosiers are suffering. And this election is effectively a REFERENDUM on GW Bush. If a couple more plants in the Indy area shut down, you just WATCH the effect on the local economy. All those working class Republicans will turn on Bush.

I know exactly what you mean! Hubby and I used to joke that when we went and voted, the workers would whisper "There they go...those Democrats!"
Sad thing is that it's entirely plausible! We've moved to Colorado since then, but worry not! We imported some of our friends into the area and they will be voting straight ticket Dem this year!

6. Yes, I'm very familiar with the Indy Star... |
|
Every time I go home to visit the folks I can pick up the Star and read something hateful and homophobic in the LTTE section.
Nevertheless, I have a gut feeling that Indiana may be in play... time will tell.

I live near Indy, and I am surprised because of all the Repubs around me. I was happy to find DU because I could not find any other opinions in the area (this could be because I live outside of the city).:o
