"That’s the question most asked by Indiana visitors. No one seems to know exactly where the word "Hoosier" (hoo-zhur) came from but there are plenty of stories on its origin -- 30 at last count. Here are some of the more popular theories:
Hoosiers are well-known for their questioning and it is possible the nickname originated because they could not pass a house without pulling the latch string and crying out "Who's here?"
In 1851 Amelia M. Murray reported that she heard the name Hoosier originate when settlers shouted "Huzza!" when gaining victory over a marauding party from a neighboring state.
Kentucky contractor Samuel Hoosier hired Indiana workers to build the Portland canal at Louisville. These superior laborers became known as "Hoosier's Men" or "Hoosiers" and carried the nickname back north with them. Unfortunately, no one has ever been able to prove the existence of Mr. Hoosier.
Before its use in America, Hoosier was used in England to refer to someone who lived in the hills or mountains. It may be related to the French osier meaning someone from the countryside. This term is still commonly used in Eastern Canada.
Indiana poet James Whitcomb Riley said the origin of the title "Hoosier" came from the pugnacious habits of the early settlers. "They were vicious fighters ... frequently bit off noses and ears. This happened so often that a settler coming into the barroom after a fight would see an ear on the floor and ask, ‘Whose ear?’ "
Today the word is used to denote an Indiana native or resident. Although the origin is uncertain, one thing is clear about the word -- "Hoosier" and Hospitality go hand in hand."
O.K. now somebody explain to me why we still don't have daylight saving time here in Hicksville???

The problem is that counties bordering metropolitan cities in other states have chosen to arbitrarily change their clocks twice a year.

Unless Chicago/Illinois/Kentucky went with Eastern time.

You're always going to have the Chicago area people go with Chicago and the Cincinnati and Louisville people go with Cincinnati and Louisville.

I don't know why the Kentucky counties can't accommodate Evansville if they want to be on the same time - Evansville has no good reason to change - except that they are cut off from the rest of the state so they don't care.

I think they should leave the time situation as it is.



(Some of the areas times are different by statute and some by choice).

Are some of these areas requiring a time change? I did not know that. I seriously thought it was all voluntary (and convenience for workers employed in those nearby cities) Could you educate me further?

The US Uniform Time Act of 1966 places Indiana in the Eastern time zone. In 1969, ten (10) counties in the Chicago and Evansville corners of the state were moved to the Central time zone where they join Chicago in using Daylight time. In 1991, an eleventh, Starke County, in the northwest (Chigago area) was added. Five (5) counties near Cincinnati and Louisville, while in the Eastern zone with the remaining 76 counties, do observe Eastern Daylight Time. Indiana State law, however, is allowed by the Uniform Time Act of 1966 to keep those 76 counties on Eastern Standard Time (EST) all year long.

 
Thus, US and Indiana law create three different time arrangements in the Hoosier State:
76 counties (including state capital Indianapolis) are in theEastern Time Zone but do not change to Daylight time in April; instead they remain on Standard Time all year long;

11 counties -- six near Chicago, IL, and five near Evansville, IN, are in the Central Time Zone and use both CentralStandard and Central Daylight; and

five other counties -- two near Cincinnati, OH, and three near Louisville, KY -- are in the Eastern Time Zone but use bothEastern Standard and Eastern Daylight.

*The U.S. Department of Transporation shifted Starke County to the Central zone with the Group 2 (Chicago-area) counties in 1991. The 1967 Indiana statute included Starke in Group 1 (most of the state). This was over-ridden by a 1968 lawsuit involving national television networks.

I live in southern Indiana and am most familiar with those counties near Louisville that change to daylight time "unofficially."

8. Reminds me of Mike Royko's column on the origins of the word Hoosier

I recall one of Royko's examples being that when early pioneers were using the privy and someone were to knock on the door to see if it was vacant, the occupant would ask "Hoooo'se ther?."

The other one was the cry "lock up the women and the cattle, the Hoojees are coming!"
