Evansville Guard unit to go to Iraq
Associated Press
EVANSVILLE, Ind. — More than 150 members of the city’s Indiana Army National Guard unit will go to Iraq at the end of the year to help provide security at checkpoints and escort military convoys.
Sgt. 1st Class Marke Parsons said Wednesday it will be the largest deployment from Evansville by any branch of the Armed Forces since World War II.
“This is an extremely dangerous mission,” Parsons said. “The things you have to watch out for are suicide bombers and bombs on the side of the road that (insurgents) set off.
“I have my fears,” he said. “Hopefully, with any luck, we’ll be able to get all 155 of our guys back home safe.”
