My rent will go up $15 each month. When I asked the landlord why, he said it was due to a doubling of his property taxes. Did any other Indiana DU'ers property taxes double? I live in Muncie. Just curious.

2. Indiana property taxes are a mess |
|
Reassessment statewide was just completed last year...property taxes certainly have doubled for some property owners. A very few have seen their property taxes lowered, but they are in the minority as far as I can tell.
Get used to it.

5. just wait til the next year's bill - you know the one we get |
|
AFTER this current legislative session - where the republican senate and house froze ed spending BUT passed a provision "allowing" local govts (re: property tax) to increase property taxes in order to replace the lost state dollars (this may go for other local services as well as education) - that is - a tax shift. The next round of increases will be due to mitch and gang - on top of the reassessment.

Here in St. Joe county, it's really a mess. From my own totally non-scientific poll, what seems to have happened was that they raised the taxes on the really old houses to silly levels, which didn't help a thing.

4. Overall property taxes did NOT go up |
|
They went up for some, went down for some and stayed the same for some. When it is all totaled and averaged it comes out about the same plus whatever the limit allowed by state law.
If owners were paying taxes on their property and it was assessed at the correct value there wouldn't had been any problem. Unfortunately, over time property assessment didn't keep up with the property value.
My taxes went down a bit.
Another factor is the elimination of the business inventory taxes in counties that took the step to have it pass by their county council. That means the tax burden gets shifted to homeowners.

Same here...
Mine went DOWN slightly...
The reassessments hit older homes the hardest...
If you bought that home in Broad Ripple in 1975 for 70G's, and your last refi was 375 grand, what makes you think the TAXES won't go up as well??

If you think it was bad this year, just wait. To try to balance the budget Daniels has cut school money. This money will be tacked on to the property tax. Your portion of the bill will depend on how hard your district was hit. In other stabs aimed at helping corporations Hendricks County has given a big time tax break to Clarion Hospital. When they built here they promised not to apply for a tax break. Their Lawyers now say they are entitled to it. It was pointed out by Eva Yackey a Republican that they lied. That they are a stock operated company with various Dr's making mega bucks on their stock in the hospital. To get around this, the crooks who run the county decided to only let then have a tax break on 80% of the Hospital. These are the same crooks who have named the new road by the hospital,Ronald Reagan Parkway.
