Stadium Site Soil Contains Arsenic

There are accusations of what some say is illegal dumping of contaminated soil from the site of the new Colts stadium. I-Team 8 has discovered that there are high levels of arsenic in the dirt. Environmentalists are calling it fraudulent and neighbors are calling it a major health concern.

Twelve acres of dirt are being dug out to make way for the new stadium. The 350,000 tons of waste will contain more than 6,000 pounds of arsenic, to be dumped less than a quarter mile from the White River.

The arsenic-laden dirt will be dumped in a gravel pit, unlined and not capped, instead of the more expensive route of dumping it into a contained landfill.

In a 24-Hour News 8 exclusive, Dick Van Frank, an environmental expert told I-team 8 the Indiana Department of Environmental Management is looking the other way.

1. Where is the White River in relation to the cities drinking water supply

That can't be good for the local drinking water supply of the city, the river, or the area surrounding the dump site.

4. I lived

in an area of Northern Michigan that was full of abandoned cooper mines. The arsenic levels were so bad there that a large area of city is a superfund clean up site. Even after 80 to 90 years the water is still too polluted for children under the age of 5 to drink it.

This is very bad, when people start getting sick and a few little children die of arsenic poisoning they'll figure it out, but by then it will be kind of late.

2. I wonder where all that arsenic came from, perhaps an old chemical...

plant. Also, what is wrong with the current Colts stadium? Why are cities always building new stadiums when there is nothing wrong with the current one. I would think the money the states, counties and cities subsidize these stadiums with could be put to much better use.

5. Missy M, mothing wrong with the current stadium...

we were just held hostage by Irsay and the Ind. Colts, who threatened to leave if they didn't get a bigger stadium, more skyboxes, etc. Ground breaking was held the same day Indianapolis laid off dozens of police and firemen, followed today by the announcement that hundreds of staff of Indianapolis Public Schools are losing their jobs. Missy, there was no reason we needed this stadium; it was shoved down the taxpayer's throats and we have no one in our party with the balls to stand up to the Repubs (including Mayor Bart).

6. I am so sick of team owners threatening to leave cities if they don't...

get a bigger, fancier stadium at the taxpayers expense. Only the wealthy or corporations can afford the skyboxes so why not let them put their own money up to build the skyboxes. It is a sad day when a football stadium is more important than police, firemen and public school staff.

7. I knew about this weeks ago

I work for a firm that does work in that area and when the city was told of the price of proper disposal, they balked and went to this plan....not surprising.

8. Mayor Bart was really pushing

for this stadium. Daniels didn't blink an eye when it came to signing on the dotted line. We did not need this new stadium and the average person here can't even afford the nose bleed section.
