The city's mayor said the state should push for all of Indiana to be moved into the Central time zone, challenging Gov. Mitch Daniels' contention that such a switch is unattainable.
"Rather, I believe that it has been left untried," Mayor Stephen Luecke said Wednesday.
Daniels on Tuesday urged the U.S. Department of Transportation to reject the request of St. Joseph County, which includes South Bend, to move to Central time. While Daniels supported the move of seven counties to Central time, he said that most of the state favored staying on Eastern time.
Luecke called on Daniels to support legislators who are seeking a statewide referendum on what time zone Indiana should be in, saying that there has been overwhelming support for Central time during recent public hearings.
