HB 1009 would end gerrymandering
Quoted from Common Cause email, received today, 3 Feb. 2006:
House Bill 1009 , legislation that would end gerrymandering, the practice of rigging political district maps to favor one political party over another, passed the Indiana House of Representatives on January 26. House Bill 1009 creates a five-member bipartisan commission to draw new districts, instead of the current system which allows incumbent politicians to choose their voters instead of the other way around. Gerrymandering of districts is a major reason why so many elections in Indiana are not competitive.

Please take action today in support of HB 1009 and contact Senate President Pro Tem Robert Garton at 317-232-9400 or 1-800-382-9467 - tell him it's time to end gerrymandering. Garton says he does not support a bipartisan redistricting commission. Over the next few days, we need to let him know that the people of Indiana support a system that allows for fair redistricting and gives the power to draw districts to a bi-partisan commission with the voters' need in mind, instead of the wishes of incumbent politicians.
