Anti-Choice bills die at close of 2006 General Assembly Session!

Just got the good news via email from Planned Parenthood:

12:01 am, March 15, 2006: the 2006 session of the Indiana General Assembly closes without the passage of any anti-choice legislation!

That's right! Your donations, phone calls, letters to the editor, and emails worked! Thank you for your diligence. It has paid off!

Members of Indiana's legislature spent the last two days of the session working on the actual business of the state, rather than concerning themselves with what goes on between a woman and her doctor.

Let's keep moving Indiana forward. In the coming elections, we have an opportunity to rid the legislature of the morality police who keep attempting to control our reproductive lives and instead elect lawmakers who will work to expand access to comprehensive sex education and birth control, and protect access to safe, legal abortion.

1. It's not over yet

The bills weren't voted on primarily because our minority leader in the House successfully dicked around with the debate and vote on Major Shit...er, Moves so that they didn't have time to get to them before the close of the session. Rest assured, they will come up again.

Abortion Bill Sponsor Says He's Worked out Compromise

State Representative Tim Harris says he's worked out a possible compromise that could lead to passage of a contentious abortion bill.

The original version of the bill would have required women seeking an abortion to be informed that a fetus may feel pain and that human life begins at conception.
