Senator says Democrats need to take on GOP in area of national security

Before he spoke, Bayh told reporters that he does not support efforts by Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., another potential 2008 presidential candidate, to censure Bush for authorizing domestic eavesdropping. Bayh said it's not clear whether the law requiring court approval before surveillance was broken, and he instead favors revisiting and possibly updating the law.

That's right, boys and girls. Bush admitted to BREAKING THE LAW bypassing FISA (a LAW, btw)
and Bayh wants to join MY esteemed trait...er,um SENATOR Mr. DeWine (R-OH) in CHANGING The Law RETROACTIVELY so it's all OK.

Seems the spying has been going on for some time too.

1. The proposed revisions go beyond terrorism

the wording is intentionally broad and would allow survellience with no court oversight for nearly anything. Very frightening. Bayh is a fool.

2. Bayh could care less about his constituents.

Bayh could care less about his constituents. He's too busy running for president and/or VP. I posted my personal experience with his office elsewhere in the IN forum.

4. My personal experience with Evan Bayh's office.

We had an immigration problem in the family. Some immigration workers were refusing to follow their own policies and were enjoying playing God with people's lives. Someone suggested that I send emails to both of our Senators. Despite several attempts to contact Evan Bayh's office (email and phone messages), No one from his office even acknowledged our request for help. Not even a Sorry we can't help you message.

I hate to admit this but, we were desperate. I contacted Lugar's office via email. Later that day, I had a response. It said, "I'm _______. I'm a caseworker for Sen. Lugar. Here's my phone number. Contact me a 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning." I did and this person started helping us right away. She never once asked us about political affiliations. She only asked us where we lived to confirm if we were Inidiana residents. Lugar's office lit fires under their tails so-to-speak and took care of our problem with immigration asses.

The kick in the head here is that I have voted for Evan Bayh every time that He has been on the ballot for Gov. and Senator. I have never voted for Lugar. It seems that Bayh is too busy to be bothered by his lowly constituents.

5. For years Lugar's office has been more responsive

that Bayhs. Letters sent to both are responded to with a letter that relates to the original letter - received within a short time frame from Lugar's office; and a letter that is a form letter than often has little to nothing to do with the original letter sent from Bayhs - MONTHS later. I think that Bayh must hire fluffy intellectual lightweights who also don't get the constituent service/concern thing any better than there boss.

8. Whenever I had to contact either Senator

for my former job (as a journalist) I always found Lugar's staff to be more polite, intelligent, competent, and willing to help or do whatever was needed.

I'm glad Lugar's office solved your problem. It's so frustrating when we have immigrants who follow all the rules and contribute and still have to take crap to be here.

10. You seem to solidify what I have heard from others.

I haven't heard anyone say anything different about the responsiveness of either Senator. Lugar's office seems to actually care about constituents as opposed to Bayh's office. I knew a ellow that used to work as a custodian in the statehouse before Bayh was Gov. He was in the Att Gen. office (maybe??). My friend was apolitical. He said taht Bayh was a spoiled rotten puke that complained about everything. He seemed to change when cameras came around though.

12. I can't stand Bayh.

I knew a family that had a wrongful legal problem down in Evansville. His office even promised to step in and offer asisstance. But then, one day, his office started ignoring them and left them to the wolves. It's sad to say but, they should have gone to Lugar's office. At least they would have gotten an explanation for stopping their interest in the case.

6. And yet, per senate races

we are left with little choice but to vote for him (due to lack of alternatives). The funnyiest thing is when folks (from elsewhere) promote Bayh as a pres or vp contender based on the idea that he has broad appeal - and the supposition that he would help carry Ohio... absolutely laughable.

In 04 there was a door to door pollster... asked questions about the presidential election/candidates.... asked questions about the governors race/candidates... asked questions about the congressional race/candidates - but no questions about the senate race or Bayh - I commented about that - esp since the point of the exercise seemed to be recruit volunteers and build 'excitement' for the races... the volunteer chuckled and said that he noticed Bayhs exclusion as well. Guess it was viewed that his inclusion in the survey would DAMPEN enthusiasm among dems. Heh.

You know, you and I have had many discussions about Bayh in the past where we agreed to disagree. We can move that to "agree to agree" now. I'm happily standing on your side of the line. :hi:

9. I almost commented to that point

above - I noted the tone. I respected that you were trying to be more optomistic, though were open to the interpretation that his moves since going to the senate might be opportunistic. He was a decent governor - and he certainly shifted the political landscape at the State House. He hasn't been all bad. But his performance in DC has been distinctly more to the right (just beyond center) than needed in order to keep support in Indiana - hence my view of political opportunism. It is one of the times that I am rather sad to concede that my impression seemed to be right.

My guess is that his own lap-dog assistants have no idea how frustrated people here in Indiana are with him. Or, maybe they do and they just don't give a damn.

I can only speak for myself but Bayh always sent letters that not only pertained to the issues but were obviously written by him. I have gotten good responses from Lugar as well but they've always been in a form letter.

Sorry to hear about the immigration problem. Because of 9/11 immigration policies have been much tougher. I would say that your problem with immigration lies with Homeland Security. You are not the only one with this problem. It's national. With any luck time will pass quickly and you'll be with your loved one soon.

As far as Bayh disagreeing with Feingold........he wasn't the only one. Even Rep. Murtha did not support it. I like Senator Feingold and respect his call for censure and I know enough about him that I know he would not care for supporters using it as an opportunity to bash other Democrats. "Feingold Bloggers" at the grassroots level distanced themselves from these types of attacks. I am glad of it. It tells me that perhaps Feingold was genuine in his call for censure and not just doing it for the publicity.
